************************************************************** Title: Kindergarten Sabbath School Program, January 15, 2000 From: NAD Children's Ministries (author: Lisa Seeders) Date Completed: December 15, 1999 Abstract: Activities to use as a supplement to help teach the lesson, JESUS VISITS HIS FRIENDS *************************************************************** Lesson Aim: Jesus wants us to learn about Him. Memory Verse: "..........Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her." Luke 10:42, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - A DAY WITH JESUS (A primarily audio & kinesthetic activity) Materials needed: Scrap paper (It will need to be cut into strips to be made into a paper chain) Scissors Glue sticks WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) On the scrap paper draw lines about one to one-and-a-half inches apart. These will be the guide lines for the children to cut their paper chain links apart. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Ask the children, "If you knew Jesus was coming to your house one day this week, what kinds of things would you plan to do with Him? Would you stay home? Would you take Him somewhere? Would you eat together? What would you have? Tell them one thing you would do. Cut a strip of paper off the scrap paper and glue the ends together making a link. Every time a child volunteers an idea have them cut a strip of paper off the scrap paper and add it to the paper chain. Talk about how many fun things there would be to do with Jesus, how short the day would be. When the ideas are exhausted hold up the paper chain. Say, "Have we forgotten anything? Did we leave any time for listening to the special things Jesus wants to tell us? Did we remember how important it is to spend time listening? (If spending time and listening to what Jesus has to say to us has already been mentioned while making the chain make sure and talk about its importance in the link of the day's events.) In our Bible story today Jesus reminds some special friends of His how important it is to slow down and spend time listening to Him. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE -LEARNING TO LISTEN (A primarily auditory activity) Materials needed: Beads (Or anything else small that can be held in a child's hand; you'll need each child to be able to hold eight of whatever you choose in one hand.) WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) In your quarterly highlight or underline all the words, listen or listened. From beginning to end of the story there are eight times one or the other of these words occur. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Give each child ten beads. Have them hold them all in one hand. If possible, sit at a table where they can keep their hands in their lap under the table. Explain to the children that learning to listen is very important. The Bible story today is about listening. Let's see what kind of listeners are in the class today. As you tell the story, each time the children hear you say the word listen or listened they are to transfer a bead from their full hand over to their empty hand. If they listen carefully, they should end up with a certain number of beads in their empty hand by the end of the story. (8) Tell them to change the beads over from one hand to another quietly and secretively so as not to give away the answer. Go through the story and have the children count how many beads they have in their hand at the end. Commend the children for their listening skills. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - MEMORY VERSE BOOKMARKS (A multi- sensory activity) Materials needed: Brightly colored card stock paper (Heavier paper than plain paper but lighter than poster board) Permanent Markers 2"-wide open lace Elmer's glue Bible WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Cut the card stock into 4" X 8" pieces. Cut one for each child. Cut the lace into 8" pieces, one for each child. In pencil very lightly write the word, LISTEN in large capital letters on one side of the card stock making sure to stay within the top 2" of the card. (The lace will be glued to the bottom 2" of the "bookmark". WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Show the children where the memory verse is found in the Bible. Give each child a card stock "bookmark" and have them trace over the word, LISTEN with a permanent marker. Then glue the lace along the bottom under the word. Put the bookmarks into a box or sack where the children can't see them. Have each child take turns drawing one out. In order for each child to get his/her bookmark back they must go to the child who has it and repeat the memory verse to that child. The child relinquishes the bookmark then to its rightful owner. The child who is holding the bookmark of another child may coach and help that child with the verse as they say it. After everyone has their own bookmark back, toss them in the sack or box and play again. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - LISTENING PHONE (An auditory activity) Materials needed: 2 styrofoam cups Nylon thread Scissors Hot glue gun WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Make a phone or speaking system by threading both ends of a 36" piece of nylon thread through the bottoms of both styrofoam cups. Tie a knot on the end inside each cup and hot glue it to keep it from pulling back through. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Show the children how the listening device works. Place a child away from you just far enough so that the nylon thread is taut with no wrinkles or sags. Have them put the styrofoam cup up to their ear. Speak into your styrofoam cup. The vibrations through the thread actually carry the sound across to the other person. Have the children think of times when they need to be carefully listening because Jesus might be trying to tell them something. They take turns speaking their answers into the listening device while another child listens to them. The listening child then repeats back what he/she heard. Some ideas of answers are: When we're having worship at home When my mother or father, grandparents or other adults are telling me something about Jesus When someone is reading my lesson to me When I'm learning my memory verse When me or someone else is praying When I'm listening to the children's story in church
