******************************************************* Title: Kindergarten Sabbath School Program, January 9, 1999 From: NAD Children's Ministries (Author: Lisa Seeders) Date Completed: December 15, 1998 Abstract: Activities to use in place of program helps to teach the lesson, A CROWN FOR DAVID ******************************************************* Lesson Aim: When we love Jesus we will want to obey Him. Memory Verse: "Guide me in your truth and teach me..." Psa. 25:5, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - LET'S PLAN A PARADE (Activity involving all senses) Materials needed: Toy instruments (Cymbals, drum, sticks, trumpets, bells etc.) White paper banner (8 sheets of 8 « X 11 paper taped together) Bible Music to "Are You Sleeping" available for a pianist or pre-recorded on a cassette tape. WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) On each sheet of banner paper print one word of the memory verse in large bold letters. Prepare the "Are You Sleeping" music on a cassette tape if you will be marching outside or if a pianist is not available. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Ask how many children have ever marched in a real parade before? Explain to the children that parades are one way that people like to celebrate a holiday or a happy occasion. Organize a small short parade with some children carrying and playing instruments, two children carrying the memory verse banner between them and one child carrying the Bible. March around the room or around the outside of the church several times. As you march, sing the following words to the tune of "Are You Sleeping". After the children have had a chance to march playing the instruments and hearing you sing, encourage them to sing along with you for several rounds. Old Words: Are you sleeping Are you sleeping Brother John Brother John Morning bells are ringing Morning bells are ringing Ding, ding dong Ding, ding dong New words Guide me in your truth and teach me Guide me in your truth and teach me Guide me in your truth and teach me Psa. 25:5 Psa. 25:5 After the parade is over and the children are settled back in their seats tell them their lesson is about a special parade led by King David. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - BANNER DECORATING Materials needed: Stickers (religious or nature variety) Glue sticks Glitter Newspaper Bible WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Unfold and lay out newspapers in a horizontal row on the floor so the children can sit on either side and use as a work area. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Bring out the parade memory verse banner. Assign 1-2 children per page of the banner. Have them sit on the floor and trace over the letters in their verse word with the glue stick. Next they sprinkle glitter on the letters they traced. When everyone is done glittering, pick up the banner and gently shake it over the newspaper to rid the banner of excess glitter. Remove the newspaper work area and lay the banner back down on the floor. Give children stickers to decorate their banner page with. Have children return to their seats. With the help of two children hold the banner up and display it for all to see. Practice saying the verse together several times. Show the children where the verse is located in the Bible. Hang the banner in the room for several weeks. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - LEARNING TO LISTEN (An auditory activity) Materials needed: None WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare in advance) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Remind the children that several people in the Bible story today forgot to obey all of God's instructions. Through the years they had forgotten to listen and obey everything God told them to. Sad things happened because of that. Tell the children you are going to help them practice listening. Call for a volunteer. Tell him/her you are going to ask them to do three things. (Give them all three instructions one right after the other.) They are to do first one thing, then the second thing and then the third thing. They need to listen closely, so that they will not forget each of the things they are to do. 1. Stand up and walk forward 3 steps. 2. Turn all the way around. 3. Return to your seat. 1. Blink your eyes four times. 2. Clap your hands twice. 3. Nod your head 1. Say hello. 2. Jump up and bow. 3. Sit back down. Plan enough of these types of simple activities so that each child in the group can have an opportunity to participate. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - THE WHOLE PIE Materials needed: Construction Paper (1 piece for each child) Scissors WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Lay a plate on the construction paper and trace around it. Cut out the circle. Divide and cut the circle into three equal pieces. Follow this same procedure for each child's construction paper. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Show the children one of the sample construction paper "pies". Ask them, "When you go to the store, would you rather buy a piece of pie or a whole pie?" "When you make a pie at home, do you usually make a piece of one or a whole one?" Show them how the three pieces fit together to make one whole pie. Explain that obeying just a little is not as good as obeying all the way, just like a piece is not as good as a whole. When you give them the following situations they are to think of ways they could obey fully. Every time a child thinks of an idea, the whole group receives a piece of their pie. After three ideas have been volunteered the whole group can have an entire completed pie. Collect the pieces and begin situation number 2. Call on various children for answers, so the same children aren't always doing the contributing. 1. If mommy asks you to empty the trash how would you do it completely? (Do all of them; look for trash around the house that is not in the bins; Put all the bins back away.) 2. If daddy asks you to feed your pet how would you do it completely? (Fill the dish carefully to the amount you know it is suppose to have; clean up any messes you make; put the leftover food away.) 3. When Jesus asks us to tell the truth, how can we do that completely? (Tell exactly what happened; don't hide anything; don't wait until your caught.) 4. When Jesus asks us to worship Him on Sabbath, how can we do that completely? (Spend time singing and praying and reading stories about Him; Cheerfully put away weekday activities and toys.
