*************************************************************** Title: Kindergarten Sabbath School Program, January 8, 2000 From: NAD Children's Ministries (author: Lisa Seeders) Date Completed: December 15, 1999 Abstract: Activities to use as a supplement to help teach the lesson, A KIND TRAVELER **************************************************************** Lesson Aim: We show we love Jesus when we help others. Memory Verse: "Love the Lord your God..............and, Love your neighbor as yourself." Luke 10:27, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - COLLECTING COMPASSION (A primarily kinesthetic activity) Materials needed: Masking tape 10 pennies Construction paper (Enough to make ten 6" high alphabet letters) Scissors WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) From the construction paper cut out the letters, COMPASSION. Make them approximately 6" high. Using the masking tape make a hopscotch board on the floor. Make sure the squares are large enough for a Kindergartner to jump into with both feet. (Many of them cannot hop on one foot yet.) Put the construction paper letters in the corners of the squares, one letter to each square. Do not put them in any order. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Divide the large group into a smaller group of 10. (If your Sabbath school is smaller than 10, children may have more than one turn.) Give each child a penny. Explain that the letters on the hopscotch board when collected will spell a special word from the Bible story. It is a long word, but an important word that every boy and girl who loves Jesus should know about. Each child takes a turn tossing their penny and trying to land it in one of the hopscotch squares. When they land in one, they hop in all the squares up to where their penny is, pick up the penny and the construction paper letter and finish hopping the rest of the way to the end of the board. When all the letters have been collected arrange the children in the correct order so the word, compassion, is spelled. Tell them what the word is and explain that it means love in action. It means your heart feels so much love and sympathy for someone, you want to show it by kind acts and words. Only Jesus can give us this compassion. He gave it to the man in our Bible story today. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - BIBLE ROLE-PLAY (A multi-sensory activity) Materials needed: None WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: This is an excellent story for role-playing. Assign the following roles to the class adding or subtracting according to class size. Donkey - (Needs to be a bigger child who can carry the Jew on his/her back) Samaritan - Jew - (Needs to be a smaller child since he/she will be carried on the donkey's back) Robbers - (Can be anywhere from 1 to several depending on your class size) Priest - Levite - Innkeeper - As you narrate the story direct the children into appropriate places and guide them in doing the necessary actions that the story calls for. Stress the concept that the Samaritan's compassion for the Jew led him to do something for him. That kind of love for others comes only from Jesus. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - NESTING HEARTS (A multi-sensory activity) Materials needed: Construction Paper Four cardboard or poster board hearts to use as patterns (One 8", one 6", one 4" and one 2") Scissors Ink pen Bible Glue Glitter WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Out of the construction paper make each child 4 hearts, one 8", one 6", one 4" and one 2". Use the poster or card board heart patterns to trace around. (Whether or not you cut the hearts out before class is up to you and the abilities of your students. Older Kindergartners can usually cut out hearts. On the large 8" hearts print the words, "Love the Lord your God. On the 6" hearts print the words, with all your heart.... On the 4" hearts print the words, and Love your neighbor. On the 2" hearts print the words, as yourself." WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Show the children where the memory verse is found in the Bible. Read and repeat it together several times. Give each child a stack of "nesting hearts". Read the words on the hearts together. Help them decorate around the edge of each heart with glitter. Show them how the first part of the memory verse, which talks about our love for God, is on the largest two hearts. The next part of the verse, which talks about our love for others and ourselves, are on the last two hearts. Practice saying the verse stacking the hearts until the children know it well. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - APPLYING BANDAGES (Primarily an auditory activity) Materials needed: Box of Band-aids Poster Board Permanent marker Ink pen WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Ask the children why we apply bandages or band-aids. (To help heal wounds) The bandage or band-aid doesn't heal the boo-boo, but it protects the wound while the miracle of healing takes place. We cannot heal all the hurts that people have. Sometimes people's bodies get hurt very badly. We cannot heal them. Sometimes their feelings and hearts get hurt very badly. We cannot heal them. But Jesus wants us to be like a bandage or a band-aid. He wants our compassion (remember what that word means?) And love to protect a person while He does the healing. Let's talk about some boo-boo's that children might have on their bodies and in their hearts. On the poster board write in small letters the ideas the children give you about what hurts them. (Examples: A dog bite, being cut with a knife, unkind words, mommy or daddy leaving home, being made fun of etc...) Write each idea separately and spread them out all over the poster board. After writing as many ideas as the children can come up with, give them all some band- aids. Before applying a band-aid "over one of the wounds written on the poster board" ask a child to think of something they can say or do that would help the wounded child. (Don't forget PRAYER! Even when there seems like there is nothing we can do, we can pray for that person) The activity is complete when all the wounds talked about are covered with band-aids. Encourage the children to look for wounded people this week that they can love and help.
