******************************************************* Title: Kindergarten Sabbath School Program, January 2, 1999 From: NAD Children's Ministries (author: Lisa Seeders) Date Completed: December 15, 1998 Abstract: Activities to use as a supplement to help teach the lesson, SAUL TALKS TO A WICKED ANGEL ******************************************************* Lesson Aim: Sin leads us little by little away from Jesus. Memory Verse: "The living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing." Eccl. 9:5, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - DISGUISES (A VISUAL ACTIVITY) Materials needed: Some simple disguises such as a beard or moustache, a wig, a hat, a pair of hose, a sheet, sunglasses etc. WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Put together several outfits that will disguise a child's identity. Place them in separate plastic bags for easy handling. 1. Wig, sunglasses and a sheet to wrap up in, so their clothes won't be recognized. 2. Hose over head to create a bald effect and moustache and a sheet to wrap up in. 3. Beard, and hat and a sheet to wrap up in. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Ask the children to close their eyes tightly. Select a willing volunteer to put on one of the disguise outfits. Ask the children to open their eyes and try and guess who is behind the disguise. Encourage them not to look around for who's missing. If they cannot guess, have the child say, "Hello, how are you today?" to the group. Select other volunteers and follow the same procedure for the other disguises. When all the children are assembled together again point out how tricky disguises can be. Maybe we didn't fool anybody today, but I bet you have been fooled before by someone dressed up to look like someone else. In our story today King Saul is fooled into thinking that someone he sees is Samuel the dead prophet. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - TRUTH TREASURE HUNT (A HAND'S ON ACTIVITY) Materials needed: 8 strips of different colored construction paper Bible WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Insert the strips of paper inside your Bible at the following texts. Hide them so they are not sticking out anywhere. Eccl. 9:5 Psa. 115:17 John 5:25 Isa. 26:14 Acts 24:15 I Cor. 15:12, 13 I Cor. 15:42 I Thess. 4:16,17 WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Explain to the children that Satan wants us to believe a lie about dead people. He wants us to believe that dead people can come back after they have died and talk to us, telling us what to do and how to live. God tells us the truth in His Word, the Bible. Let's have a treasure hunt and find just a few of the places where God tells us that dead people stay in their graves until He comes. Call volunteers to search through your Bible for colored strips of paper. Do not read the texts. When all eight strips of colored paper have been found, count them together. (For a larger group, several Bibles may be used and the texts repeated and hidden in as many Bibles as you wish. Keep all one texts one color for easier counting by the children at the end.) GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - RHYTHM VERSE (An Auditory Activity) Materials needed: Wooden dowel sticks (Rhythm sticks - approx. 12" long) - 2 per child WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Hearing a specific beat and rhythm helps young children memorize something. Give each child a pair of rhythm sticks. Say each line and have the children repeat you exactly, saying the line and tapping their sticks together. The sticks are tapped once for each one syllable word and twice for each two syllable word. "The living know that they will die (tap) (Tap,tap) (tap) (tap) (Tap) (Tap) (Tap) CHILDREN REPEAT but the dead know nothing." (Tap) (tap) (Tap) (Tap) (Tap, tap) CHILDREN REPEAT Practice several times until the children can chant and tap in chorus. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - Materials needed: 1 sheet of heavy 8 « X 11 card stock for each child Scissors 1 Brass Fastener for each child 1 Jesus Sticker or picture for each child Glue-sticks 1 Pop sickle stick for each child Plain white paper Crayons Zip-loc bags Hot glue gun & glue sticks WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Lay a piece of the card stock paper down horizontally so it is longer than it is high. In the middle of this paper, cut a slit approximately 6 inches across leaving an equal distance of 1-2" on each side. Do this same procedure to each child's card stock paper. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Give each child his card stock paper and a Zip-loc bag with the following materials in it. A popsicle stick, a brass fastener, a Jesus sticker or picture, some scraps of plain paper and a couple crayons. 1. Have each child decorate the pop sickle stick to represent themselves. Cut out little arms, legs and a head from the scraps of white paper in their bag. 2. Next they color the body parts and stick them on their pop sickle stick. (Teacher only: Turn their pop sickle stick over and hot glue the head of their brass fastener to the middle of the back of their pop sickle stick. Glue it so that when it is opened one leg of the fastener will stick straight up and the other straight down.) 3. Third, they stick their Jesus sticker or picture on the right-hand side of their card stock paper at the end of the 6" slit. 4. Finally, they insert their brass fastener, pop sickle stick man through the 6" slit and open the legs of the brass fastener. They should be able to slide their pop sickle man from one end of the slit to the other. Have all the children slide their pop sickle sticks over close to Jesus. Talk about how small sins move us further away from Jesus. (Move the pop sickle sticks to the left). MAKE SURE AND EMPHASIZE THAT JESUS DOES NOT DO THE MOVING. IT IS OUR SINS THAT CAUSE THE SEPARATION. Saul did not start out separated from Jesus. Little by little his sins moved him farther and farther from Jesus. How can we be sure to stay close to Jesus. By praying and asking for help and forgiveness each day.
