Memory Verse: ".........give thanks to him and praise his name." Psa. 100:4, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - SECRET WORD TOSS (A multi-sensory activity) Materials needed: Nerf ball OR beach ball OR some other type of soft ball WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Have the children stand in a circle. Tell them you are thinking of two secret words. You will toss the ball to a child standing in the circle. They come to you and whisper what they think the two secret words are. If they guess correctly, (the words are, "Thank-you") they return to their place in the circle and they become the one who tosses the ball.) If they guess incorrectly, they return to their place in the circle and you remain the one tossing the ball. Once a child has repeated the secret words to you they no longer have to. Encourage the ones tossing the ball to throw it to children who have not had a turn. Make sure all children know the secret words before ending the game. In our Bible story today Jesus heals ten men. Only one remembers to speak these secret words to Jesus. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - FINGER-PLAY STORY (A primarily auditory activity) Materials needed: Small white self-adhesive dots (found in office supply sections of stores) WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: The children will use their fingers in a little finger play that tells the story. Before beginning the finger- play have all the children put 2-3 white adhesive dots on each finger. Now each finger represents one of the ten lepers in the story. (All children tuck both hands behind their back) One day in a town around Palestine Along came Jesus healing the sick and the blind (Have children bring hands out from behind their backs and put one finger up at a time.) As He was leaving now what did He see? One man, two men, no, there's three Four five, six, seven, eight, nine ten Would the number of men never end? But something is wrong, just look at these men They're crying and pointing at their white-spotted skin (Have fingers point at each other) Jesus looks on in pity with love in His eyes And moves closer to them to everyone's surprise He tells them to go show themselves to the priest And away they go in very great haste. (Hide hands behind back again) As they were running they looked at their sores And discovered the sores were no longer more. (Peel the stickers off the fingers and throw them away) (Bring one finger back up) And one thankful leper remembered to say, Thank-you to Jesus before he went on his way. Although Jesus loves us and always He will To hear us say thank-you is for Him still a thrill. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - MEMORY VERSE SONG Materials needed: Musical instruments Piano player or tape recorder WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary except for recording the tune of Mary Had A Little Lamb onto a cassette if you do not have a piano player. Have them choose instruments and march around the room singing it to the tune of Mary Had A Little Lamb. Give Thanks to Him and Praise His name Mary Had A Little Lamb Praise His name Little Lamb Praise His name Little Lamb Give Thanks to Him and Praise His name Mary had a little lamb Says Psalm one hundred four It's fleece was white as snow ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - THANK-YOU CARDS (A multi-sensory activity) Materials needed: Thank-you cards (one for each child) Small pictures of the following: (Some can be found on p. 37 and 44 of the quarterly) Clothes, toys, food, nature item, family, boy or girl Sticker of Jesus Scissors Glue WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Reduce and xerox the pictures from above so that they can all be glued in the thank-you card. Xerox one of each picture for each child. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Give each child a thank-you card, the pictures and the sticker of Jesus. Place the sticker of Jesus in the center of the card. Talk about how thankful you are to know Jesus. Have the children express their thankfulness for Jesus, who He is and what He has done for us. Glue the rest of the pictures inside the thank-you card. Do them in sequence together, discussing specific items or people each child is personally thankful for. Encourage the children to take the card home and look at it before they pray each day. Jesus can see our thank-you cards to Him, but He also loves to hear us say thank-you. Each picture is a reminder to the children of things or people they can thank Jesus for every day.
