In 1997, ACS launched a new initiative to start tutoring projects for at-risk children in response to
Gen. Colin Powell's request for help.
The Corporation for Community and National Service
has given ACS a grant for 18 AmeriCorps*VISTA positions
as Regional Tutoring Organizers based in Baltimore,
Dallas - Ft. Worth, Denver, Huntsville - Chattanooga
(Al/TN), Los Angeles, Manchester (KY/Appalachia), Miami,
New Orleans - Houma (La), New York, Philadelphia, Tacoma
- Seattle (WA) and Washington, DC.
VISTAs work in partnership with community residents and local leaders to develop tutoring/mentoring sites for underprivileged children. Children need caring
people who they can look up to. So come participate and motivate.
